The Noticing Project

Privacy Policy

Last updated: May 2026

The Noticing Project is a free online platform offering research-backed psychological interventions designed to build self-awareness and self-management skills in college and high-school students. This Privacy Policy describes how The Noticing Project collects, uses, and protects your personal information when you use our platform.

We receive your personal information through the profile you create on our platform. When using any of our services, you consent to the collection, storage, and other uses of your personal information as described in this Privacy Policy.

Data may be used for research to improve the platform and contribute to scientific knowledge, but your personal information or individual responses will never be shared outside the research team. All research results are reported in aggregate form only (e.g., averages, distributions, and correlations across large groups).

If you have any questions or comments about this Privacy Policy, please contact us or reach out to thenoticingprojectorg@gmail.com.

In this Privacy Policy, the term "personal information" refers to any information that identifies you or by which your identity could be deduced, including your name, email address, and your responses to all interventions and reflections.

Information Collected Upon Registration

When you create a new account on The Noticing Project, we collect your email address and, if you choose to provide it, your name and organization.

Information Collected During Interventions

When you participate in any intervention or reflection activity, we collect your responses to all prompts. Your responses are private by default. You may choose to share select reflection responses anonymously on the Public Reflections page, but this is always optional and requires your explicit opt-in.

Optional profile information — including gender and date of birth — may be collected to help us better understand our user base and improve the platform. If you prefer not to share this information, you will still have full access to all features.

Device Information

We may collect information about the device you use to access The Noticing Project, including device type, operating system, device settings, unique device identifiers, and crash data. The information collected depends on your device type and its settings. Please check your device manufacturer's or software provider's policies for more details.

Cookies

Like many websites, we use cookies to collect additional usage data and improve our services. A cookie is a small data file transferred to your device. We may use session and persistent cookies to understand how you interact with our platform, monitor aggregate usage, and customize your experience.

Most browsers automatically accept cookies. You can change your browser settings to stop accepting cookies or to prompt you before accepting one. However, some features of our platform may not function properly if cookies are disabled.

Log Data

Our servers automatically record information ("Log Data") created by your use of the platform. Log Data may include your IP address, browser type, operating system, pages visited, location, and cookie information. We use Log Data to operate, measure, and improve the platform.

How We Use Your Data

Information collected upon registration and through interventions may be used for research purposes. Prior to any analysis, data is made anonymous by removing all personal identifiers. No identifying information or individual responses will ever be shared with anyone outside the research team, and all results are reported in aggregate form only.

Email addresses are collected to provide access to the platform, send you completion reminders for multi-part activities, and make your own responses available for review.

Law and Harm

Notwithstanding anything to the contrary in this policy, we may preserve or disclose your personal information if we reasonably believe it is necessary to: (a) comply with a law, regulation, or legal request; (b) protect the safety of any person; (c) address fraud, security, or technical issues; (d) protect The Noticing Project's rights or property; or (e) protect against imminent harm to the rights, property, or safety of The Noticing Project, other users, or the public. Nothing in this policy is intended to limit any legal defenses or objections you may have to a third party's request to disclose your information.

Information Security

We follow generally accepted industry standards to protect the personal information submitted to us against unauthorized access or disclosure. Your data is stored securely using Supabase, which operates on industry-standard encrypted infrastructure.

Accessing and Modifying Your Personal Information

If you are a registered user, you can access or update your personal information at any time through your profile page.

Our Policy Towards Children

Our services are not directed to persons under 13. If you become aware that a child has provided us with personal information without your consent, please contact us. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13, and we will take steps to remove such information and terminate the account if we become aware of it.

Changes to This Policy

We may revise this Privacy Policy from time to time. The most current version will always be available at thenoticingproject.org/privacy-policy. By continuing to use the platform after changes take effect, you agree to be bound by the revised policy.
